(Wednesday, September 29; 10 AM) APS to Host Ribbon Cutting on David T. Howard Middle School Facility
Atlanta Public Schools will host a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the “official” re-opening of the historic David T. Howard High School (551 John Wesley Dobbs Avenue) building as a middle school, serving students in grades six through eight in the Grady High School Cluster.
A $52 million renovation and expansion of the campus was completed last fall. However, the ribbon cutting event was postponed until this school year as APS has returned to in-person instruction with strict adherence to COVID-19 mitigation protocols – such as mandatory masks for all students, employees and visitors on district campuses, and mandatory surveillance testing for all employees, twice a week.
Before it closed in 1976, Howard High School produced several prominent graduates including Walt “Clyde” Frazier, NBA Hall of Fame member; Maynard H. Jackson, Jr., Atlanta’s first black mayor; Vernon Jordan, a successful businessman and former advisor to U.S. President Jimmy Carter; and Mildred McDaniel Singleton, the only woman to win a gold medal at the 1956 Olympics in track and field (high jump). Also, famed civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. attended Howard when it was an elementary school.
The new building and campus layout was designed by architects Stevens & Wilkinson, Inc.

APS Announces Launch of B2GNow Software Tools to Increase Visibility, Partnerships with Diverse Suppliers/Vendors
Atlanta Public Schools (APS) is excited to announce the launch of its diversity management software solution, B2GNow, in the Center for Equity and Social Justice (CESJ). Using B2GNow software will increase visibility of local and national Minority, Women, and Small Business suppliers for APS internal and external stakeholders.
This initiative underscores the APS mission and reflects the CESJ vision to inspire a renewed organizational culture and serve as a national model for intentionally, explicitly, and sustainably addressing challenges of equity in education.
“Creating an atmosphere where additional diverse businesses are able to partner with APS and engage our students is our goal,” said APS Superintendent Dr. Lisa Herring. “I thank the Atlanta Board of Education, and especially Chair Jason Esteves and Vice Chair Eshe’ Collins, for their efforts to spearhead the upgrading of our vendor management platform. It's a game changer in helping us meet our supplier diversity goals.”
Through the implementation of four B2G software modules (Outreach and Events Management, Contract Compliance, Vendor Registration, and Spend Analysis) the district will:
- Automate and streamline searches for diverse vendors
- Ensure accurate diversity tracking
- Set and measure supplier diversity goals
- Track the effectiveness of outreach efforts
Through improved communications with certified SBE and MWBE firms and contractors, APS and the CESJ hope to build on a culture of inclusion and become a model district for successful supplier diversity.
All vendors are invited to register via the new system by visiting:
