(Wednesday, October 27 | 10 AM & 11:45 AM) Atlanta Public Schools to Host Ribbon Cutting, Renaming Ceremonies for High School, Stadium in Midtown
Atlanta Public Schools (APS) will host two ceremonies to celebrate the expansion and renaming of one of the city’s most historic high schools, as well as the renaming of the school’s stadium on Wednesday.
The district will hold a ribbon cutting and renaming ceremony for Midtown High School, formerly Grady High School (929 Charles Allen Drive, NE) at 10 a.m., Wednesday, followed by a renaming ceremony at 11:45 a.m., for the school’s stadium now known as Eddie S. Henderson Stadium.
The school and stadium had been named for Henry W. Grady, a 19th century journalist and orator who was a supporter of white supremacy. The Atlanta Board of Education voted in the fall of 2020 to rename the school and its stadium. A student vote settled unanimously on the name Midtown. The facility opened this fall with a $34.9 million renovation, funded through SPLOST, which features:
- A four-level addition
- Ten (10) new classrooms (replacing modulars)
- Four (4) industry-certified Career, Technical and Agricultural Education (CTAE) spaces
- Two (2) science labs
- A new media center, administrative offices, counseling spaces, enlarged cafeteria with a school store, a family living center for students with special needs to learn life skills and additional parking spaces.
The football field was already named in honor of Mr. Henderson, and so the Board voted to rename the stadium for Henderson as well. Henderson was a graduate of APS (Archer High School, closed in 1995) and went on to become the head football coach and athletic director at then-Grady High School, assistant principal at Carver High School, athletic director and then principal at Archer High School, and district athletic director. Henderson was also the first African American in Georgia to be certified as an athletic director. He passed away in 2001.

David T. Howard Middle School Campus
Earns American Institute of Architects Award
David T. Howard Middle School earned an award for architectural distinction recently from the American Institute of Architects (AIA).
The former high school underwent a $52 million renovation and expansion of the campus and was converted into a middle school serving students in the Midtown High School cluster. Before the high school closed in 1976, Howard High School produced several prominent graduates including Walt “Clyde” Frazier, NBA Hall of Fame member; Maynard H. Jackson, Jr., Atlanta’s first black mayor; Vernon Jordan, a successful businessman and former advisor to U.S. President Jimmy Carter; and Mildred McDaniel Singleton, the only woman to win a gold medal at the 1956 Olympics in track and field (high jump). Also, famed civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. attended Howard when it was an elementary school.
The new building and campus layout was designed by architects Stevens & Wilkinson, Inc.

- Diez (10) aulas nuevas (reemplazando modulares)
