(Wednesday, 10 AM) APS to Host Annual High School Football Media Day, at Therrell High School

The head coaches and several key players from all 11 Atlanta Public Schools high school football teams will talk about their prospects for the upcoming season at the district’s annual High School Football Media Day event, Wednesday, 10 a.m., at Daniel M. Therrell High School (3099 Panther Trail, SW).

Highlights this season include:

  • South Atlanta senior Keyjuan Brown, one of the state’s top running backs who has committed to Purdue, is back to lead the Hornets, the reigning Region 6-AA champions who advanced to the state quarterfinals last season.
  • George Washington Carver has several players returning from last year’s team that was the Class AAA state runner-up.
  • One of metro Atlanta’s most fierce rivalries is back on as Frederick Douglass and Benjamin E. Mays will face each other on opening weekend, Friday, August 19 (7:30 p.m.), at Lakewood Stadium.
  • North Atlanta has been selected as one of just 20 teams that will participate in this year’s edition of the annual Corky Kell Classic, the nation’s premier early-season high school football event. The Warriors, who finished 6-4 last season, will face North Forsyth, Thursday, August 18 (5:30 p.m.), at West Forsyth High School.

(Thursday, 9 AM) APS Safety & Security Team to Conduct Active Shooter Training Drill

Atlanta Public Schools Police Chief and Safety & Security Executive Director Ronald Applin will lead an active shooter training drill for APS police officers and provide information on the district’s plans for keeping students and employees safe, Thursday, 9 a.m., in the former Towns Elementary School building (760 Bolton Road, NW).

The exercise is one of several held throughout the school year as a part of the district’s safety and security protocol. Chief Applin will discuss other aspects of APS’ safety plan including the district’s new door numbering system, plans to hire more officers, the School Zone Speed Camera pilot project, and more.

(Saturday, 9 AM – 1 PM) District’s Annual Back-to-School Bash is Back In-Person

The metro area’s premier back-to-school event is BACK, live and in-person for the first time in two years!

The Atlanta Public Schools Back-to-School Bash will be held Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Georgia World Congress Center, Halls C 1 and 2. The pandemic forced the cancellation of the 2020 event and the 2021 Bash was a drive-thru event.

The Back-to-School Bash is sponsored by Amazon, Amerigroup, Gas South, Georgia Natural Gas, Mercedes-Benz, Verizon and Waffle House.

The event, held exclusively for Atlanta Public Schools students and families, provides free backpacks, school supplies, vaccinations, and other resources – including free COVID at-home testing kits thanks to a donation of 2,000 units from PHASE Scientific, a high-growth biotech company with marketing and sales offices in Atlanta.

(Monday) APS Begins its 150th Year on Monday, August 1

Atlanta Public Schools will launch the 2022-2023 school year on Monday, August 1, marking the 150th anniversary of the founding of the district.

APS has been a cornerstone of the history of Atlanta and has shaped and influenced many of its leaders. A number of events are planned throughout the school year to celebrate the special milestone, including a parade in April 2023.
