Atlanta Public Schools to Conduct Active Shooter Training Drill, Receive COVID Home Testing Kits, Thursday

ATLANTA – Atlanta Public Schools’ commitment to the safety, security, and well-being of its students, families, and employees will be demonstrated with two events on Thursday.

(9 AM) APS Safety & Security Team to Conduct Active Shooter Training Drill
APS Police Chief and Safety & Security Executive Director Ronald Applin will lead an active shooter training drill for APS police officers and provide information on the district’s plans for keeping students and employees safe, at 9 a.m., in the former Towns Elementary School building (760 Bolton Road, NW).  The exercise is one of several held throughout the school year as a part of the district’s safety and security protocol. Chief Applin will discuss other aspects of APS’ safety plan including the district’s new door numbering system, plans to hire more officers, the School Zone Speed Camera pilot project, and more.

(3 PM) PHASE Scientific to Donate 2,000 COVID Testing Kits to APS
PHASE Scientific, a high-growth biotech company with marketing and sales offices in Atlanta, is donating 2,000 at-home COVID testing kits to APS. The kits will be given away to families at the district’s annual Back-to-School Bash, Saturday, at the Georgia World Congress Center.  Approximately 30 to 40 boxes filled with testing kits will be delivered at 3 p.m., to the district’s Alonzo A. Crim Center for Learning and Leadership (155 Garnett Street, SW). APS Health Services Director Dr. Valencia Hildreth and PHASE Scientific Chief Revenue Officer Doug Field will help unload the boxes and talk about the importance of the donation.
