Atlanta Public Schools Weekly News Tip Sheet (August 22 – 27, 2022)
 

 

Editors/Producers/Reporters: The following is a list of events, programs, accomplishments, and/or initiatives occurring in Atlanta Public Schools (APS) this week. Please use it as a guide as you develop your coverage plans.

Great Atlanta Bash Features Four Games Pitting APS vs. Clayton County Schools

For the fourth consecutive season, Atlanta Public Schools will host its Great Atlanta Bash football extravaganza, featuring four APS schools taking on two Clayton County Schools and two Douglas County Schools.

 

The games will take place at Henderson Stadium on the campus of Midtown High School (929 Charles Allen Drive, NE) and be televised on Peachtree TV.

 

Here is a look at the matchups:

 

North Atlanta vs. Charles Drew (Friday, 8 PM). North Atlanta is 1-0 this season after a 31-27 win over North Forsyth last week. The Warriors trailed 27-18 entering the fourth quarter. They finished 6-4 in 2021. This is the season opener for Charles Drew of Clayton County. The Titans finished 3-7 last season. This is the first time the two schools have played. South Atlanta vs. Chapel Hill (Saturday, 10 AM). This is the season opener for South Atlanta. The Hornets have won two consecutive region championships and finished 11-2 last season, advancing to the Class AA state quarterfinals. Chapel Hill of Douglas County is 1-0 after defeating Stone Mountain last week, 17-0.  The Panthers finished 2-8 last season, their first under head coach Brad Stephens, who was South Atlanta’s head coach from 2016-2020. He led the school to its first region title in school history in 2020. This is the first meeting between the two schools.  Tickets:  https://gofan.co/app/events/637355?schoolId=GA5308

 

Carver vs. Riverdale (Saturday, 1 PM). Carver is 1-0 this season after a 22-6 win over South Cobb last week. The Panthers finished 11-3 last season, advancing to the Class AAA state finals. Riverdale is also 1-0 after a 69-0 win last week over county-rival North Clayton. Raider head coach Rodney Hackney is an APS graduate (Mays, 1991) and coached two APS schools during his career – Mays in 2005, Washington 2011-2014. This is the first meeting between the two schools. Mays vs. Douglas County (Saturday, 4 PM). Both teams are 1-0 after bit wins over rivals in their season openers last week. Mays defeated APS rival Douglass, 35-0, while Douglas County beat Lithia Springs, 52-13. Mays finished 3-7 last season. Head coach Marquis Slaton, in his first season in the position, is a 1992 graduate of Mays. Douglas County finished 8-4 and advanced to the second round of the Class AAAAAA playoffs. Mays has won five of the six previous meetings between the two schools, including a 38-13 win the last time the teams met in 2019. Tickets: https://gofan.co/app/events/637357?schoolId=GA5148
