APS to Add 25 Electric Buses to Fleet Thanks to EPA’s Clean School Bus Program

Atlanta Public Schools is replacing some of its diesel school buses with 25 electric buses, as part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s $5 billion Clean School Bus Program.

The program is a part of President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and calls for a historic investment in low- and zero-emission school buses over the next five years. APS is one of 389 school districts in the nation, and 15 in Georgia, selected for the first round of funding from the rebate program.

The district will receive a $9.9 million grant to purchase the buses as well as install the necessary charging infrastructure. School bus upgrades funded under this program will result in cleaner air on the bus and in bus loading areas, as well as in the communities where the new electric buses operate, ultimately resulting in a reduced carbon footprint.

Effective transportation plays a critical role in student success,” said APS Superintendent Dr. Lisa Herring. “I am proud to be a recipient of this grant which helps to promote an overall healthier environment for our students and communities.

APS has 417 school buses in its inventory that drive about 4,000,000 miles a year.

APS Students Eligible for Free Lifeguard Training Under New City of Atlanta Program

Atlanta Public School students are eligible for free lifeguard training classes under a new program by the City of Atlanta designed to increase the number of lifeguards at public swimming pools next summer.

The city’s Lifeguard Training Program will allow eligible participants to learn the basic fundamentals of lifeguarding through American Red Cross training. The purpose of this training is to provide entry level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatics emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies. The training will consist of four mandatory, in-person sessions (19.5 hours) and an online course (7.5 hours).

APS students ages 15-and-up may receive the training free of charge. The cost is $205 for non-APS students (ages 15-and-up). The sessions will be held starting Nov. 19 through April 8, Saturdays, 10 AM through 2 PM, at the Rosel Fann Natatorium (365 Cleveland Avenue, SE).
