Atlanta Public Schools Announces Organizational Updates

Changes include merger of Division of Schools and Division of Academics

ATLANTA –  Atlanta Public Schools has announced several organizational changes aimed at enhancing support of schools and creating a more coherent and comprehensive system.

Effective July 1, 2023, the Division of Schools and the Divisions of Academics will merge into the Division of Academics and Schools. Yolonda Brown, currently the Chief Academic Officer, will assume the role of Chief Academics and Schools Officer. Dr. Matthew Smith, who has served as Interim Chief of Schools while continuing his duties as Chief Performance Officer, will maintain that primary role.

The moves are designed to:

  • Improve student support related to Student Discipline and other wraparound services
  • Enhance the implementation of proven instructional strategies to yield greater results; and
  • Streamline support for schools, allowing for more coherence between the functions of the two former divisions

Additionally, the following Associate Superintendent assignments will be effective July 1:

  • Paul Brown
    • Midtown and Jackson Clusters
  • Shelly Goodrum
    • Mays Cluster and Single-Gender & Non-Traditional Programs
  • Dr. Kala Goodwine
    • South Atlanta and Therrell Clusters
  • Tommy Usher
    • Douglass and Carver Clusters
  • Dr. Margul Woolfolk
    • Washington and North Atlanta Clusters

These changes are in keeping with our commitment to continuous improvement of our processes to refine our core work of educating children,” APS Superintendent Dr. Lisa Herring said. “We remain steadfast and dedicated to high quality teaching and learning for all of our scholars.”
