(Thursday, August 22 | 9 AM) ESPN, Cricket Host Success Seminar for Mays High School Seniors

The ESPN Cricket MEAC/SWAC Challenge Kickoff is more than just one of the first college football games to launch the 2024 season (Saturday, 7:30 p.m.). To seniors at Benjamin E. Mays High School, the impact and influence of the event could change their lives.

The world’s most watched sports network, ESPN, is joining forces with Cricket and several other corporate partners to host a Senior Seminar, Thursday. Launched in 2008, the event features a panel discussion that focuses on career opportunities in sports, but in a way that most high school students haven’t considered yet – off the field. In recent years, the event has added a life skills component, as sponsors have offered their take on topics like personal branding and entrepreneurship.

Thursday at Mays, the event will include breakout sessions with officials from Cricket, Truist, Georgia Power, Atlanta Gas Light, Microsoft, and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Officials from those organizations will speak to students about various career opportunities with their companies.

Additionally, the panel discussion will feature some of the nation’s top young professionals, hosted by ESPN anchor Jay Harris. They will talk about the highs and lows of their journey and how they overcame obstacles from childhood, through high school and college, to where they are today.

There will also be a college fair where representatives from a number of institutions of higher education, including Florida A&M University, Norfolk State University, Morris Brown College, Albany State University, and Grambling State University, will speak with students about their school’s admissions process, financial aid opportunities, and campus life.

“Our theme for this school year is ACTION: Actual Change To Improve Outcomes Now,” said Mays High School Principal Ramon Garner. “We want to expose our students to events like this that we believe will be motivational, and will show them a pathway to success.”
