Atlanta Public Schools News Tip Sheet

Editors/Producers/Reporters: The following is a list of events, programs and/or initiatives occurring in Atlanta Public Schools (APS) this week. Please use it as a guide as you develop your coverage plans. Thank you for your interest in Atlanta Public Schools.

Monday, July 16

  • (11 a.m. and 6 p.m.) Public Hearings on Budget, Millage Rate Plan That Provides Relief for Homeowners Who Received High Assessments:  Atlanta residents will have a chance to provide feedback on the District’s budget/millage rate plan during the first two of three public hearings. To honor its commitment to helping homeowners, APS is proposing a millage rollback of 1.0 mill. The hearings are scheduled for 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. at the APS Center for Learning and Leadership (CLL), 130 Trinity Avenue, SW.
  • (Noon, E.S.T.) APS Superintendent Wins National Communication Award:  Dr. Meria J. Carstarphen will be presented with the 2018 National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA) Communication Technology Award for Superintendents, today during the opening session of this year’s NSPRA National Convention in Los Angeles. The award is presented annually to a superintendent for leadership in redefining, upgrading, and integrating cutting-edge communication technology to improve and expand outreach and engagement with education stakeholders — both internal and external.
  • (6:30 p.m.) APS Students Propel Dynamo Water Polo Teams to Junior Olympics: Sixteen students from APS high schools, who are a part of the APS Knights club water polo team, have helped the Dynamo Water Polo Club represent metro Atlanta in the USA Water Polo Junior Olympics, July 21-29 in San Jose, California. Before heading west in pursuit of a national championship, the players will practice Monday and Wednesday, at the Dynamo Swim Center (3119 Shallowford Road, NE), 6:30 – 9 p.m. (NOTE: The practice session will be open to the media.)

Wednesday, July 18

  • (6:30 p.m.) APS Students Propel Dynamo Water Polo Teams to Junior Olympics: The 16 students from APS high schools, who are a part of the APS Knights club water polo team and helped the Dynamo Water Polo Club represent metro Atlanta in the USA Water Polo Junior Olympics, will hold their final practice prior to departing for the national tournament, being held July 21-29 in San Jose, California. The practice session will be held at the Dynamo Swim Center (3119 Shallowford Road, NE), 6:30 – 9 p.m. (NOTE: The practice session will be open to the media.)

APS Annual Back To School Bash Set for July 28 

Once again, APS students will kick of the school year right during the District’s annual Back to School Bash, Saturday, July 28 at the Georgia World Congress Center (Hall C), 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The free event, held exclusively for APS students and their families, features more than 50 exhibitors, fun activities for children, immunizations (pre-registration required), free health screenings, and tons of educational, after-school and community resources. Students must be present to receive a free backpack filled with school supplies (while supplies last) by showing their APS report card.

School Registration Continues 

APS students who need to register for school may still do so over the next two weeks. Students will only need to re-register if they have moved, or are entering sixth or ninth grade. Registration takes place at all APS school sites from 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Thursday. The first day of school for APS students is Wednesday, Aug. 1.
