(Thursday | 10 – 11:30 a.m.) Washington HS Hosts Ushers New Look Panel on the Business of Sports
More than 200 students at Washington High School (45 Whitehouse Drive, SW) will learn about the business side of sports, as the school hosts the Usher’s New Look Foundation’s Sports Spark Day. The panel of sports professionals includes Miami Dolphins running back and Atlanta native Kenyan Drake, Senior VP of Labor Policy and League Affairs for the NFL Adolpho Birch III, Atlanta Braves Senior Director of Diversity and Community Marketing Adrian Williams, and Morgan Stanley Financial Advisor Walter Smith.

 

(Friday | 10 – 11 a.m.) Pro Athletes, Celebrities to Surprise, Inspire Students at M.A. Jones ES
Nearly a dozen athletes and celebrities in town for Super Bowl LIII will pay a surprise visit to students at M.A. Jones Elementary School (1040 Fair Street, NW) and participate in the school’s motivational Super Bowl Pep Rally. The event will include singing and dancing performances, and motivational speeches on the importance of staying in school, working hard and persevering through tough times. Several lucky students will win giveaways like pizza coupons and tickets to the NFL Super Bowl Experience. Guests include WNBA star and three-time Olympic gold medalist Angel McCoughtry, Olympic gold medalist and world record holder in the 400 meter hurdles Kevin Young, Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ defensive back Ryan Smith, Denver Broncos’ safety Jordan Moore and rappers FlauJae and YQ Dreams.

 

(Friday | Noon) Construction of New Tuskegee Airmen Global Academy Reaches Milestone
Students, parents and staff members at Tuskegee Airmen Global (TAG) Academy (1654 S. Alvardo Terrace, SW) will celebrate the completion of a major phase of the construction of their new school. The “topping out” party marks the successful completion of the framing phase of the new TAG Academy facility, being built on the same campus at a cost of $30.5 million. The event will feature a beam-signing ceremony where students, staff, parents and community members will have the opportunity to sign one of the beams of the new building, which is on schedule to be completed in time for the first day of school in August.
