Editors/Producers/Reporters: The following is a list of events, programs, accomplishments and/or initiatives occurring in Atlanta Public Schools (APS) this week. Please use it as a guide as you develop your coverage plans. Thank you for your interest in Atlanta Public Schools!

 

APS Now Enrolling Students in New College and Career Academy, Through January 2, 2020

Atlanta Public Schools (APS) is now enrolling students in a new, innovative school program that will prepare students for success after they graduate from high school.

The Atlanta College & Career Academy (ACCA), scheduled to launch at the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year, will provide more access to career pathways and prepare APS students for high-demand technical careers aligned with the economic and workforce needs of Atlanta and across Georgia.

The enrollment period for the ACCA will run through January 2, 2020. The ACCA will offer 14 career pathways and serve up to 1000 students. The pathways include: Aviation Maintenance; Carpentry; Criminal Investigation; Culinary Arts; Cybersecurity; Dental Science; Early Childhood Education; Emergency Medial Responder; General Automotive Technology; Graphic Design; Hospitality, Recreation and Tourism; HVAC and Refrigeration; Patient Care; and Programming.

B.E.S.T. Academy Earns STEM Certification

Business Engineering Science and Technology (B.E.S.T.) Academy has become the only all-male, grades 6-12 public school in the state of Georgia to earn a certification in Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) or Science Technology Engineering Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) curriculum.

BEST Academy was accredited by Cognia (formerly AdvancED and Measured Progress), which cited the school for creating a family-like STEM environment for its students. BEST Academy joins Cleveland Avenue Elementary School, Coretta Scott King Young Women’s Leadership Academy (CSKYWLA) and M. Agnes Jones Elementary School (STEAM certified) as schools earning STEM or STEAM certification.

 

North Atlanta High School Senior Selected as Coca-Cola Scholarship Semifinalist

Soleil Golden, a senior in North Atlanta High School’s IB Diploma Program, has been named a semifinalist for the coveted Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation Scholarship Program.  

Soleil plans to major in neurology, with a concentration in psychology, in hopes of becoming a cognitive neuroscientist. She is also a semifinalist for the Gates Scholarship and a finalist for the Posse Scholarship.

The Coca-Cola Scholars Program scholarship is an achievement-based scholarship awarded to graduating high school seniors. Students are recognized for their capacity to lead and serve, as well as their commitment to making a significant impact on their schools and communities. Each year, 150 Coca-Cola Scholars are selected to receive this $20,000 scholarship. 

 

Carver Early College Senior Wins $10K Technology Scholarship

Cindy Sorto Carcamo, a senior at Carver Early College, is one of just three metro-Atlanta high school students who were selected to receive a $10,000 scholarship from the YWCA of Greater Atlanta Teen Girls in Technology (TGI Tech), supported by American CyberSystems (ACS Group).

Cindy will use her scholarship to attend Georgia State University in the fall of 2020. She plans to major in chemistry with the ultimate goal of starting a cosmetics company.
