APS Announces Two Big Events for District Football Teams in 2020

The 2019 season is still in progress, but APS high school football teams are already making big news for the 2020 season!

This week it was announced that Carver and Mays High Schools have been selected to participate in the 2020 Corky Kell Classic, the nation’s preeminent season-opening high school football event, which will feature 22 teams in 11 games over four days – Wednesday, August 19, 2020, through Saturday, August 22, 2020.

Carver and Mays will be featured in the event’s kickoff games, scheduled to take place at West Forsyth High School, Wednesday, August 19. Carver will face Cherokee (Cherokee County) at 5:30 p.m., before Mays takes on host West Forsyth (Forsyth County) at 8:30 p.m.

Mays is one of the top programs in Georgia. The Raiders have a record of 10-1 this season and won the Region 5-AAAAAA championship for the third time in the last four seasons. They won their first-round state playoff game last week, 39-7 over Northview (Fulton County), and will host Coffee in tonight’s second-round game at Lakewood Stadium (70 Claire Drive, SW).

Carver, which won the Region 6-AAAAA championship in 2017, finished this season with a record of 7-4, after advancing to the state playoffs for the eighth consecutive season.

Additionally, the District has announced that the Great Atlanta Bash will return in 2020! The second annual event features three games at Georgia State University Stadium, with all three being televised on Peachtree TV, in conjunction with CBS46.

Next year’s event will take place on Saturday, August 29, 2020, and will be a battle of APS vs. Clayton County. In Game 1, B.E.S.T. Academy will face North Clayton; in Game 2, Carver will face Lovejoy; and in Game 3, Mays will face Riverdale. Game times will be announced at a later date.
