APS Foundation to Receive $280K Gift for COVID-19 Response from Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta and United Way of Greater Atlanta
Funds will go to the Atlanta Partners for Education, the District’s foundation, and will be used for food distribution as well as technology devices and connectivity for students and families
(ATLANTA) – Atlanta Public Schools (APS) will receive a $280,000 gift from the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta and United Way of Greater Atlanta, to go toward the District’s coronavirus (COVID-19) response effort.
The District’s foundation, the Atlanta Partners for Education (APFE), is one of 27 organizations selected by the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta and the United Way of Greater Atlanta to receive grants from the Greater Atlanta COVID-19 Response and Recovery Fund. It was established in March by the two organizations to direct funding to nonprofits on the front lines helping the metro Atlanta region weather this unprecedented health and economic crisis.
APFE has been the APS foundation for nearly 40 years, serving as the gateway through which the corporate and philanthropic communities support student achievement and develop strategic solutions to challenges that impact APS students and families. The grant from Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta and the United Way of Greater Atlanta will support COVID-19 specific programs in nutrition and technology, providing free meals for students and families and securing laptops and internet access for distance learning.
“We are thrilled to be included on the list of organizations selected to receive assistance from this fund,” APS Superintendent Dr. Meria Carstarphen said. “The establishment of the Greater Atlanta COVID-19 Response and Recovery Fund is yet another example of how the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta and the United Way of Greater Atlanta continue to show their support and dedication to improving the lives of families in metro Atlanta. We are extremely grateful to them for this generous gift.”
These resources will go to support continuing our partnership with GOODR, a nonprofit that will distribute school meals directly to the homes of 1,000 new APS families as well as to support I'm a Father First, a nonprofit that will distribute high quality meals to food insecure families in the Douglass cluster. Additionally, the funds will purchase devices and internet packages from Comcast as part of our Get Our Kids Connected campaign to ensure students can continue distance learning.
