APS Continues Support of Families with Modified Food Distribution Plan for Summer

Monday, May 18, was last day for the food distribution program the District has operated for the past two months

(ATLANTA) As the school year comes to a close, Atlanta Public Schools (APS) has announced that the District will continue to support students and families for three Mondays in June with a modified food distribution plan where food will be provided to Horizons, Breakthrough, and the Boys and Girls Club to be distributed to families enrolled in their feeding programs. Southwest Foodservice Excellence (SFE), the District’s food service vendor, will make five-day meal packs and deliver them to those organizations on June 1st, 8th, and 15th.  The service will be scaled back to provide 60,000 meals during that time, down from 160,000 meals weekly.

Additionally, the student meal distribution program for designated English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) communities in the Grady and North Atlanta clusters will also resume on June 1st, 8th, and 15th from La Amistad, one of the District’s generous partners. Grocery distribution from the APS ESOL Team to these families concluded this week; however, plans are in the works with additional partners for summer groceries for approximately 1,000 ESOL families across the entire district.

When APS moved to a virtual learning environment in March as a result of COVID-19, the District’s Nutrition Department, along with SFE and a number of community partners created a massive food distribution network. It grew to involve more than 400 volunteers, with help from the National Guard and the Fulton County Sheriff’s Department, and distributed 160,000 meals to students and families every week. In alignment with the end of the school year, that food distribution program ended this past Monday, May 18.
