APS Superintendent Dr. Lisa Herring to Visit Schools, In Person and Virtually, on Day One
In-person visits include two renovated campuses, the school where Dr. Herring completed her student teaching and a meal distribution site
ATLANTA — Atlanta Public Schools (APS) Superintendent Dr. Lisa Herring and members of the Atlanta Board of Education will visit several schools, virtually and in-person, on Monday, August 24, when the District reopens for students.
*Media members are invited to join Dr. Herring and Board members as they visit:
(In-Person: 9 – 10 AM) David T. Howard Middle School | 551 John Wesley Dobbs Avenue, NE
The 7.4 acre campus of historic David T. Howard High School, which closed in 1976, has undergone a $52 million facelift, and is now Howard Middle School (formerly Inman Middle School). The renovated, 209,000-square foot facility features state-of-the-art technology but pays homage to its notable past:
- Much of the building’s original masonry has been preserved.
- The finishing beam, which was signed by a number of Inman students and families, as well as community members, is visible through a skylight.
- An original classroom, complete with a hardwood floor, wooden desks and a chalkboard, has been preserved and will be used by students and teachers.
Famous Howard High School alums include Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (who attended when it was an elementary school), Maynard Jackson, who became Atlanta's first African-American mayor, NBA hall of fame member Walt Frazier, and gold medal winning Olympian Mildred McDaniel Singleton.
(In-Person: 10:30 – 11:30 AM) Atlanta College and Career Academy (ACCA) | 1090 Windsor Street, SW
The former Parks Middle School building is now home to the District’s first college and career academy, where up to 1,000 high school juniors and seniors can study 14 different high-demand career pathways. The 80,000-square foot facility, renovated at a cost of $11 million, features fully equipped classrooms for carpentry, culinary arts, dentistry, general automotive technology, graphic design, HVAC maintenance, patient care and other fields.
(In-Person: 12 – 12:30 PM) Daniel M. Therrell High School | 3099 Panther Trail, SW
Dr. Herring will return to the school where she was a student-teacher while attending Spelman College in the early 1990s. The campus looks much different now, after undergoing an extensive $9.8 million facelift in 2003.
(Virtual: 2 – 2:15 PM) West Manor Elementary School
Dr. Herring will drop in, via Zoom, on a virtual lesson being taught by fourth-grade teacher Cathy Carter. (NOTE: Media interested this virtual visit should contact Seth Coleman, APS Media Relations Manager, for the Zoom link, meeting ID and passcode.)
(In-Person: 4 – 5 PM) Booker T. Washington High School | 45 Whitehouse Drive, SW
Dr. Herring will help pass out meals to families in the Washington Cluster. Through the District’s meal distribution program, parents and caregivers order meals online, a week in advance, to ensure that each child will receive five breakfast and five lunch meals, one for every school day of the week.
* Media members interested in attending any of the visits should RSVP to Seth Coleman, APS Media Relations Manager, by 6 PM on Friday, August 21. All media members attending in-person visits must wear a mask. Social distancing will be practiced while walking through the buildings.
