Atlanta Board of Education Announces Board Governance Academy

ATLANTA –  The Atlanta Board of Education (ABOE), in collaboration with the Georgia Boards Association and the Council of Great City Schools will host a Board Governance Academy, Friday, July 30, in the Board Auditorium at the Atlanta Public Schools (APS) Center for Learning and Leadership (CLL).

The day-long forum (8 AM to 4 PM) is designed to provide information on the roles and responsibilities of board members and effective school board governance practices, and the importance of school board governance based on student outcomes.

Additionally, there will be presentations on the district’s five-year strategic plan, its equity initiatives and budget building process, and a report on the state of APS by Superintendent Dr. Lisa Herring. Declared school board candidates as well as GO Team members were invited to attend, and the public is invited as well (seating is limited).

“We are excited about the launch of the Governance Academy, which provides an opportunity for stakeholders to learn more about the core of our work and the direction in which we are going,” ABOE Chair Jason Esteves said. “This is an additional step the Board is taking to strengthen its own student outcomes-focused governance practices and ensure that stakeholders are well-informed and engaged.”
