The Buddy Bench idea was started by an 8 year old boy, named Christian, who lives in Pennsylvania. He had a great idea to have a bench on the playground designated for students who aren’t sure who to play with, who to talk to, or who just want to assess a situation before joining in a group. He called it the "Buddy Bench", a place to meet and play with new friends or old friends. Read about Christian's idea here.
Sometimes, especially on the playground, students forget how to be kind. Sometimes they leave people out, say mean things, or don’t share. The Buddy Benches are here to remind all students to be kind and to reach out to one another. Morningside believes that Christian's idea can help eliminate loneliness and foster friendship on the playground. Thanks to the Morningside PTA, our school now has TWO Buddy Benches: one on the front playground and one on the back playground. Morningside wants to be a school where people help each other, cheer each other on, share with one another, think of others and focus on building a strong community.
The Buddy Bench is part of a bigger initiative at MES to create a Culture of Kindness. The Culture of Kindness includes everyone (i.e. our children, staff and MES parents) being our kindest selves with every interaction and in every moment we can! This means being kind in all the things we do, say, and think! We can do it! We hope that this initiative can help you talk with your child about being kind, inclusive, proactive and making new friends.
